The hardest part wasn't designing a travel website. It was designing one that didn't look like a travel website.
The category is saturated with the same visual language — full-bleed photography, generic CTAs, "curated experiences" in every headline. To position Tenure as a slow living alternative, every word and every layout decision had to resist those defaults. The copy had to do the heavy lifting: building trust, communicating ease, and making the brand feel like a person rather than a platform.
We started with naming. The brief pointed clearly toward slow living and simplicity — so the constraint was a name that carried philosophy without spelling it out.
After exploring directions like Drift, Elsewhere, and Tempo, we landed on Tenure. The word means time spent in a place — quietly, deliberately. It's the anti-itinerary built into a single noun. With the name anchored, the copy followed. The manifesto came first — "Travel shouldn't feel like homework" — and every other line on the site had to earn its place next to it. We audited each section against one question: does this sound like a friend who knows the right innkeeper, or does it sound like every other travel site? Anything that failed got rewritten. The wireframe went through three full rounds of copy revision alongside the layout. Two feature sections were initially duplicating the same message in different formats — one was restructured into a full-width editorial break to give the page breathing room without repeating itself. The bento grid took the functional angle (what we do), the full-width section took the emotional one (why it matters).
Sometimes the best brief is a feeling — and the job is just to make everyone else feel it too.
